There are many Katoy (‘lady boys’) in Thailand. Here is how to determine if that beautiful woman is actually a man.
Look for any of the following signs that may indicated the person is actually a male:
- Adam's apple. This is no longer full proof as many now remove their adam's apple surgically.
- Height; (anything above 5.8 is a little suspicious)
- Modified facial features - usually men's faces are more angular.
- Too large feet.
- Too big shoulders.
Listen to the voice. Ladyboys speak softly to mask their deeper voice, compared to genetical girls.
Look at the way she/he walks. Swishy, flirtatious walking is a ladyboy "tell".
Check the shape of the wrist. Men's wrists are usually straight. Women's slant inwards toward the hand. Supposedly this is why it is more comfortable for women to wear bracelets.
Look for a more triangular shaped torso, a woman has a more hour glass shape.
Remember this is a common segment of the Thailand. Transgender operations are easy to obtain in Thailand.
Never go seeking the illegal company of those in Thailand. It is illegal and tourist are often targets for robbery or for police undercover operations. It is extremely common and less policed but you could be detained in a foreign jail if caught.
Avoid high prostitution areas or red light districts. They are crime havens and you could be a victim of a crime. There may be people there who will misrepresent their sexual identity for a profit.
Tips
- Remember most transgendered individuals are great people and should not be lumped into derogatory categories or assumed to partake in prostitution.
Warnings
- Thailand has areas with high prostitution rates, underage prostitution and high crime areas, just as many other places around the world. You should use caution and avoid these areas. Speak to your travel coordinator or find a reputable local guide to assist you.
