How to Entertain Yourself During a Long Ride

Riding in a car with nothing to do for several hours doesn't sound like much fun. But there are ways to make it more enjoyable...

First find a decorative sheet or blanket to cover only your seat. Bring a pillow to put behind your head for extra comfort in case you fall asleep.

Find a backpack for the ride. Fill it with stuff to entertain you with. Some good things to have are a couple of good books (that you haven't read), snacks , iPods /MP3/other musical devices/, electronic games ( Nintendo DS's , any other game thing you could play with), crossword puzzle books (your mom is bound to have some) and some magazines.

If you have a CD player, iPod ,

If you are riding with a brother or sister , try playing some road trip games. Try license plates games and 'I spy' and so on.

Snacks are another good thing to have. Try buying a water bottle that you can refill through out the trip, and its good to bring some non-perishable food. Crackers, Fruit snacks, and a couple sandwiches are always good to have to stop cravings in between meals.

Tips

  • Make sure to set it up the night before traveling to get the best seat. Check that you have enough leg room and that everything packed around you is secure. You don't want anything fall on you once you start moving!
  • Make sure your batteries will last, and bring extras.
  • If you get in a fight with a sibling, just slip on your headphones or face the other direction.
  • If you find yourself getting bored, try going to sleep or striking up a conversation with your travel companions. Or just see how bored you can get. Let your mind drift and wander. When you have an interesting thought, write it down. (Creative people don't fear boredom, because some of the best ideas come then.)
  • Look out the window every now and then. Not only is it interesting, but it will give you a better idea of where you are going. Also, it may keep you from getting carsick.
  • On the way back from a trip, you can talk about your favorite and least favorite parts of the trip.
  • If you stop for a meal, avoid eating fast food or anything that might make you feel queasy.

Warnings

  • Try not to drink too much during road trips- especially when the nearest exit is over 10 miles away!
