How to Ask Someone for a Ride

Jul 30, 2009 09:22 PM

So you need a ride, because you have no car or other mode of transportation. But you still have to get somewhere, so why not ask for a ride?

Make sure you know someone who has a car.

Kindly ask that person what they are doing. This is very important because it is not polite to disturb someone if they are busy.

It is then customary for them to ask "What are you doing?" At this point you describe your horrible dilemma of having no ride.

If at this point the person does not offer you a ride, you should attempt to reinforce the fact that you are in need of transportation.

If they still do not offer the ride, then you should simply flat out ask "Can you give me a ride there?".

Tips

  • Make sure you know the person you are asking for a ride from.
  • Don't be too subtle with your hints at your need for transportation, sometimes people need anvil sized hints.
  • Sometimes, volunteering to buy the person coffee (or some other food/drink item) helps.
  • With gas being so expensive these days offer to give them a little money for the ride. Most of the time just this simple offer will be enough to make the person give you a ride, and usually they don't take your money. Butbe prepared to give them money if you do offer to pay them.

Warnings

  • If the person has plans -- do not push-- let them keep their plans, don't be selfish.
  • If the person says no, don't push the subject.
